Zarquon's Singing Fish!

Went to see Cold Mountain on Friday afternoon with Roy. It lived up to its billing a stonking film. Some really chilling moments in it and a very bitter-sweet ending. Made me really think about the Civil War and how it must have been like.

When I was in America in 1985 visiting a friend, we went round touring the Civil War and a couple of American Revolution battlefields so I knew about the battle that's close to the beginning of the film. What it didn't mention (as it was irrelevant to the plot) was that there was a regiment of black soldiers there, who were cut to ribbons as there was a lot of hatred of black soldiers, even though some fought on the Southern side.

You can call me TC

I hope the book's good, too - I gave it to a friend as a birthday present, not having read it myself. The film isn't out here yet, I don't think, it has to wait as it can't be shown publicly or it would disqualify it for the Berlin film festival or something.

It was one of those rare films which made me want to read the book! You'll really enjoy it, although there are some very sad bits.

I read the book and loved it. Have heard from folk who've done both that the film doesn't live up to it.... as usual I'm afraid smiley - sadface

The only films I can think of that really work are Gone with the Wind and the Lord of the Rings series. Why is that I wonder?

I love books so much - my internal cinema is usually way better than anything that Hollywood can reproduce!!

I'm in two minds whether to see Cold Mountain... hmmmm ... nope, still can't decide. I'm glad you enjoyed it ZSFsmiley - smiley

Ah, now I haven't read the book, so it will be interesting if I do. I would recommend seeing the film. I've never seen Jude Law before, and he was interesting as Inman. When he appears at first, I didn't think anything of him, however that changed as the film developed. I thought that Nicole Kidman was excellent too.

I think the battle scenes were well done too - what is referred to as the battle of St Petersburg is what I know as 'The Crater'. I thought it was well done and the music was good in it - I don't cope with horrific stuff very easily and although what happened was pretty dreadful, the music made it bearable.

The other music which was really nice was the Sacred Harp singing in the church. (I think it was likely to be Sacred Harp rather than Southern Baptist.)
