Whisky's journal - Anyone out there like to tell me what the heck's going on?
Demon Drawer Posted Nov 3, 2005
Thank you Mina for referring to the ACEs code of conduct.
As I have pointed out most notably on the ACEs home page I am not upset with H2G2 because of the latest situation. However, having been told by a community voluteer some time ago that one of my entries on peer review did not meet the writing guidelines and then have them fail wholeheartedly to tell me which one except that it injected homour into the subject I've become disgruntled with some of the siad volunteers.
They have in the lastest situation poured some fuel unto the flames rather than try and smooth things down which has not helped.
I have also been accused of bullying tactics by a member of staff when all I was doing was pointing out my concerns about the operation of some part of the staff. I'm sorry to say that in the past members of the staff would not have put me down for an honest opinion in that way and I am glad to say many of them are people I still consider to be friends.
This site is also unfortunately a place I have been spending a lot less time recently due to RL committments and sadly was also the palce I met my ex-fiancee. While we are still frinds there are also a lot of ghosts around here for me.
At the moment I am committed to merely finsihing off the stuff I have started to write, after that I will have to see.
Although in one small part of the site some dear friends are baiting me (apologies for the use of that word if it offends) to come out and do a little bit more than that through terrible spelling and geography.

1) Actually, DD., I wasn't referring to you about pulling rank. I fully understand there are other reasons why you are becoming disassociated with the site. That does not change the fact that I have seen numerous posts in the threads under discussion that effectively state 'I have been here longer than you Wolfden, so you should toe the line'. I have seen others that hilariously presume to tell the guy how it is 'if he behaved in the way we told him, he'd be our friend'. It may well be that the ACE's overstepped their bounds, but the so-called 'senior' members of the site were, I'm afraid, well out of line, and I'm afraid I conclude that a lot of this fuss is caused by people who know they've been caught with their hand in the cookie jar trying to say that the dog did it.
2) I seem to recall that many, many people involved in this discussion were outraged when it was discovered that the 'Denver Contingent' were running a message board that effectively lambasted and ridiculed members of the editorial team and the site in general. Apparently though, it is ok for 'us' to do it about others.
3) It amazes me that the action took place during a week Wolfden was known to be on holiday. So the adults concerned in this dispute were so proud of their graffitti that they waited til the victim couldn't even respond.
4) Did your mothers never tell you that if you scratch it, it'll scar. Ignore him if he irritates that much.
5) It is *still* only a fecking website. One man cannot affect it all that much UNLESS YOU LET HIM. And you all seem pretty intent on letting him do it.

DD, I'd be interested in knowing if the ACE that critisized(sp?) your entry was a 'freshie' or an 'oldie'?
In the past, as I remember it, you had to prove yourself to be a worthy member of h2g2 in order to become an ACE, and the criteria were much stricter than it turned out to be later.
When the influx of new researchers started rising quite alarmingly (this was before the film, and before Salmon of Doubt - I've forgotten the reason) the Italics panicked and started accepting anyone's application to become an ACE solely on the basis that they knew their way around and could answer questions from newbies - or knew where to look for the answer if they didn't.

**bangs head against wall** <-- but not because of the content of this particular thread.
Reading through the varied threads on the subject I'm finding it more and more incredible how, someone I consider to be a minor irritation, hardly worth worrying about - is being treated as the most destructive element to have ever crossed this site.
The closest analogy I can find to what I'm seeing is if George W Bush were to start dropping H-bombs on Paris because he doesn't like the way the French talk to him!
An additional thing that's worrying me is that I read somewhere (don't ask me where or who said it - I can't remember) something along the lines of...
"When Wolfden gets back from holiday and I tell him he's caused 2 of my friends to leave - he'll respond in his usual off-handed way and I'll probably leave"...
Course he will! Telling him he's the cause of all this is about as useful as having a profound discussion with a chicken to try and convince him to avoid sneezing on other chickens and thus spreading bird flu.

I think I'm having to come to the conclusion that however little affect one researcher has had on me or you, mate, for some bizarre and unfathomable reason a large number of researchers have allowed him to become the boojums in their life.
Some of them, like Master B (to his great credit), have admitted that they were perhaps a little out of order in their response. Some of them have behaved like a kid caught with their hands in the cookie jar and lashed out at the system, the ACEs and any number of other things.

I treated Wolfden like an intelligent human being and tried to help him. He treated me like dirt and I got very cross. So now I've stopped treating him like an intelligent human being.
But he is still human and deserves to be allowed to post his inanities and to get a little comfort from the site. h2g2 is big enough to cope. It's not as if he's the only person who is using h2g2 for idle chat while the rest of us are furiously working. I'd say most of the people on the site are only here to chat.

Indeed so, Gnomon. I think the problem is that *some* (and I stress some, not all) involved in this discussion seem to believe that paragraphs 1 & 2 of your post are mutually exclusive.

"for some bizarre and unfathomable reason a large number of researchers have allowed him to become the boojums in their life."
Think I'll have to just accept it as being unfathomable then!
One nice thing about this thread though is that it's shown me not everyone on the site seems to have been overcome by this collective rush of s**t to the brain!
So, does anyone else have any idea what action they're going to take when this inevitably kicks off again when he comes back?
Personally I'm split between:
1) burying my head in the sand
or
2) standing up for an idiot against people I have/had a great deal of respect for.

Think I'll go for pointing and laughing.
And possibly picking up rattles and waving them in front of baby's face.
