which versions of *nix should i try?

Restraints:
must have a boot floppy as machine is really old, so not booting from cd.

the hdd on the machine is 2GB.

no instructions that make eyes glaze over.


have tried to install Xandros (peet pointed me toward it, it dosn't seem to want to do anything with my pc smiley - erm)

Yup, Xandros only seems to boot from CD. Actually, pretty much every modern distro comes with a boot CD.

That is, apart from the ones that come with a boot DVD. smiley - nahnah

Most of the older (2-3 years old) distros have a "\DOSUTIL\" directory on the disc, with instructions for creating a set of boot floppies, usually 3 or 4. Who knows, Xandros might have something similar, but I haven't looked yet. smiley - smiley

I just looked. There's the "RAWRITE2" tool in \tools\ and a file called "boot1440.img" in \boot\alt\... Between those, you can probably build a viable boot floppy. smiley - geeksmiley - ok

a bit late now but for anyone who comes here late to see wot wuz posted...

Net BSD has a boot floppy for install...
