A Conversation for Finnish Pronunciation
Great article - can you tell me what happens when vowels are used together?

Excellent article - at last I know how to say 'Hannu Mikkola' correctly!
I have to admit, most of my contact with the Finnish language comes from hearing the names of sportsmen from Finland...
One that puzzles me is Teemu Tainio, who at the moment is playing for Tottenham Hotspur. I was wondering what to do with the 'ee' and the 'ai' and the 'io' - at the momemt, I'm pronoucing them as I would in English and I'm sure I must be wrong somewhere!

Hello
The 'ee' in Teemu is simply a long 'e', so Teemu is approximately pronounced as 'Teh-mooh', with a long 'eh' and a short 'ooh'.
'ai' and 'io' are simply (see how simple this is?) pronounced by first pronouncing the first sound and then the second sound right after it: Tainio = Tie-knee-o (in which the 'o' is the Finnish 'o' sound).
Hope this helps
