Effects of alcoholic blackouts

Does anyone know what really happens to the brain while experiencing alcoholic blackouts? That is when you do lots of weird / stupid stuff without remembering it the next day, due to excess drinking. Mostly I wonder about the physical effects on the brain; what is really damaged??

I am not sure - I have only had one blackout to my knowledge and as far as i know I just pulled a lot of personality changes - would run up, tell people I loved them and would miss them and then threaten to beat them up - until I was sat down (and I do remember this bit) and warned off.
A bit scary when you are told this. I suppose you do lose all inhibitions when drunk, say things you would never say etc. maybe alcohol is a kay to lock which should not necessarily always be opened...

Forgot to mention - this key is quite dangerous. My ex used to completely lose it over the smallest things - being Irish, he was constantly drunk. Never hit me, but would be completely irrational, totally selfish and cruel.
Alcohol can be good thing, but in the wrong hands (like his) it can be totally horrible. Thank goodness I am out of that!

A few times this has happened to me: I wake up one saturday morning, with a good feeling. No hangovers, the sun is shining, birds singing and everything. Then I meet someone, and the first thing they say is "Goddamn! You were really f****ng drunk yesterday!"... and the day is ruined... wondering what the hell I did to make them say that...

I suppose in a way that is worse - the fact you are probably still a little drunk and feeling on top of the world, and some cruel cruel friend comes along and says "remember...!"
