Ice floe

I have read that the Antarctic has given rise to a iceberg some 100+ miles long. Is this the precusor to a rise in sea levels? And if the answer is affirmative---should I buy property near Death Valley or even on Malta???

Welcome to h2g2 smiley - ok

If an iceburg doesn't melt, it won't affect sea levels smiley - smiley. We're unlikely to see a rise more that 1m in the next 50 years or so (due to thermal expansion), so if you stay away from deltas and flood planes you should be fine. On the whole though, it does seem that the sea ice around Antarctica is not reforming to its full extent each winter, as can be told from old whaling records. Even so, sea ice again doesn't affect the water levels though eventually some of the land-locked ice could melt. This is more in the 200-400 year range though.
