A Super Furry Animal

OK, here goes...this is either really hard, or really easy once you get it. There is a (fairly simple) meta-clue which links all the clues:

I assume the meta-clue is SMITH, which will go neatly after pretty much all those answers.

So, is it as simple as saying that Blacksmith, Goldsmith, Silversmith and Locksmith are all professions?

Mel Smith, Will Smith, Arthur Smith and John Smith are all comedians

Angela Smith, (the other) John Smith, Jacqui Smith and Andrew(?) Smith are all politicians.

That leaves me with Sarah-Jane Smith (a Dr Who companion), Adam Smith (a boy who I taught science to last year), Matt Smith (a Blue Peter presenter) and Wonderful Smith (some sort of musician). Er....

That's pretty close...one of them is in the wrong group.

One of the groups isn't specific enough.
