Might nuclear contamination be involved in the formation of hydatidiform moles? Russia is distinct for the Chernobyl nuclear energy plant disaster. Japan and the surrounding areas also experienced significant nuclear fallout from WWII. Perhaps radioactive carbon 14 and its ability to cause birth defects and cancer is also a culprit for this problem.

Supported by the fact that quoted levels were lowest in the United States, where we have been lucky enough to have had negligible exposure to hightened background radiation.

Fascinating theory!! I have not come across any sites that suggest that there may be a link. Maybe I'm just looking in all the wrong places...
