A Conversation for Gravity
G, the gravitational, or Newton's constant

I'm always taught that G was called the constant of Cavendish, named after Henry Cavendish (1731-1810).
G, the gravitational, or Newton's constant
Dr Hell Posted Jun 8, 2001
Cavendish determined the value of G first, so maybe you'll find that name in some textbooks. It is a similar problem with Avogadro and Lochschmidt. Former invented the concept, latter stipulated or determined the value.
G is most commonly referred to as 'Newtons Constant'

BTW Cavendish was one of the biggest propellerheads of his time. Might be worth writing something on him in another entry...

I feel strangely attracted to this thread.
Cheap gag but what can I say?

I've only ever referred to it as the "gravitational constant".

Many years ago (when our television was in black and white) there was an ad on TV about safety at work. The voiceover went something along the lines of "Sir Isaac Newton told us why an apple falls down from the sky." Does anyone remember the rest?

G, the gravitational, or Newton's constant

Wasn't it something like:
"until the day Reginald Molehusband did it right..."
or
"I hope he's a good boy like you and cleans his teeth every night and every morning." Or was that a crocodile ?
