Can anyone give an explanation of why the fork ball works? I used to throw it, but I have no idea what it was doing.

3 Words: Lots of Topspin. I didn't include it here because it evolved into the split-fingered fastball.

I think that the forkball is thrown with the fingers off the seams while the split-fingered fastball is thrown with the fingers on the seams. In any case, it's too close to a split-fingered fastball to be considered a different pitch. IMHO, of course.
