Today I decided to check the rules for the Loch Linnhe Swim.
It turns out that as I have to take glucocorticosteroids in order to stop me rejecting my liver and dying I'm prohibited from taking part 
If they used FINA rules then I'd be allowed to obtain a TUE, Therapeutic Use Exemption, these allow people, like myself, who take a medicinal dose of a prohibited substance which would grant no competitive advantage to competing all levels up to, and including, Olympic level.

would you be allowed to do the same distance in the local baths ? as in a sponsored event

I expect so, but it would be a lot easier in the local baths and it wouldn't really be any sort of challenge, I used to do 5,000m, over 2M regularly and easily back when I swam properly so 1250m would be nothing.

is there now other way round the obstacle, could you not see your doctor for some type of medical loop hole as it were ?

That's the whole point. If they used the Fédération Internationale de Natation rules I could get an exemption as the drug concerned is used therapeutically. However they don't, so I can't. In fact I think that, technically, asthmatics are also banned under the rules system they use.
