For some time now he mrs and I have been thinking about adding to the family, that is in getting a dog. We both had dogs in the family as we were growing up and now the little frood is older and shown she can be trusted with animals we decided to bite the bullet and made some visits to the nearby rspca shelter to look for a rescue dog to become a part of the family.
And we found her! http://www.flickr.com/photos/10523521@N06/12389726858/ (cut and paste it cos of the @ symbol, sorry)
Her name is Rosie, she's a 7 year old collie-x and comes from a home that did not want her any more. Heaven knows why, she's wonderful. She's as soppy as anything, dotes on the little frood, is good with other dogs and is great off the lead (so much so we're thinking of finding a local flyball club for her). She's a bit pully on the lead and a little possessive of her toys, but after just a week it feels like we've had her a lifetime.

Getting a dog is one of the few things I've procrastinated about over the years. I too was brought up with dogs (labs - ) and would love to have one around.
Living alone presents difficulties which I don't think are fair to impose on a dog - like having to leave it on it's own some days, not having time to train a puppy while I'm working (yes, a rescue dog is an option). And of course, I don't exactly have the most suitable doggy car right now
Good for you though Matt I'm envious. Perhaps one day when I'm less tied to work and can afford a sensible car as well as the black beast, I'll finally get round to owning my dream black labrador.

QSS and I have generally taken on smaller rescue animals. Our list of unwanteds currently runs at a rat, a hamster and two rabbits, althought this is a bit of a low patch, taking on unwanted animals often results in the less healthy ones who don't last so long. Nonetheless it's a great thing to do.
