Virus stuff in South Africa

Colleges and universities here are all doing their work online now. It has led to some really funny excerpts from lectures posted on social media.

One professor started out in a slow, boring way. Then he it got interesting...ah, here is...

The main complaint has been the scramble to locate enough webcams, mics, etc.

The prison business is scary. Philadelphia is limiting arrests to violent crimes to keep from overcrowding jails. Harvey Weinstein, a high-profile convict, apparently contracted the virus at Rikers (a NYC jail), and is now being sequestered in prison.

And everyone's angry at a certain US senator who went to his gym while waiting for his test results...and is now in quarantine because he has the virus...and he's a doctor, no less...smiley - rolleyes

The jail I work at closed down onsite visitation a couple/three weeks ago, as well as classes and church. Since visits are over video kiosk anyway, visits can still be conducted if the inmate's visitor(s) have a smart phone with the correct app. Theoretically, we're not taking any new inmates, unless it's someone with charges that have a mandatory hold (DUI, domestic assault) or something violent. Or a felony. Work crews aren't going out (which is dumb, as there's no physical contact with the general public), so the pods (inmate housing units) are getting painted. The one free phonecall limit has been lifted, so that anyone brought in that can't be released on their own recognizance can keep calling until they can be bonded out by a bondsman. If we have a hold on someone being released by another facility, we're booking them in and releasing them without their entering the jail (we've got a mobile form and an inkpad). Just did the first one that way today. I wonder if D remembered that he was supposed to take a mugshot and email it to the jail, then delete it?

Oooh... Well, if D did forget, the guy's previous time with us wasn't that long ago (less than 6 months) so the old photo would likely be OK, anyway. Normally, mugshots are taken in booking in one of those height poster things, but with wanting to not bring people inside that won't be staying, we're either supposed to get the camera from the Assistant Jail Administrator's desk (yeah, no) or the Shift Lead is to use their phone, email the photo to the jail, and delete it from their phone once it's been confirmed that the photo arrived. Normally, mobiles aren't allowed in the jail.

Hiya all! Thanks for explaining the jail stuff over there Amy. Sounds like you're organized. Over here … well the jails are a bit of a disgrace. But it's far, far worse north of the border in Zimbabwe …

OK so South Africa is going on lockdown midnight tomorrow, for three weeks. Its almost as bad as France … you can go outside only for essentials. BUT they SAY they're setting up shelters with adequate hygiene for homeless people … which here in South Africa means a substantial number of folks.

I'm making preparations, will tell y'all what I'll be doing during lockdown.

Oh, no--if anything, it's racism against mugs, since they're the ones getting shot!
