I got a lovely present from the folks whose kids I'm teaching art - book vouchers! I spent them on art books:
1. A book with reference photos for fantasy artist - basically lots of fantasy-style characters in many poses. I'm going to practice a LOT from this book.
2. A book on Fairy Art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Lots of inspiration and magic and stuff!
3. A book about visual illusions, PLUS explanations or how and why they work. There are even some ones that are unexplained i.e. they work but no-one knows why they do! I believe any artist should know about such illusions because you have to understand the quirks of the human visual system ... all art is an illusion after all. The book also contains nice works by artists like Maurits Escher and Salvador Dali.
So anyways I'll be having fun with these!

How nice to get such a thoughtful present! And you didn't even have to have a number to use them! Enjoy them and we'll look forward to seeing the finished products for as well.

What a wonderful gift
How old are the children you are teaching Willem? And do you have a remit?
I was wondering if you could work your gifts from them into a 'thank you lesson' somehow. Explaining that you had been learning from the gifts that you had from them and how great the books were
Bit of Dali perhaps? As a little fun you could make moustaches and wear them for the lesson? If you do I would like to see a photo of Willem with moustache

So glad you are teaching Willem, you have such talent to impart, and the interaction will be very good for you. Perhaps it will lead to other things.

Hello folks! Elektra would you be interested in my practice sketches? Peanut, what is a remit? And what is chenille? The kids are about ten and twelve years old respectively. I certainly will take them the books (well except the one which has rather improper art in it) and show them stuff and I hope we could work some of it into lessons.

Those things are used for pipe cleaners, and chenille is furry stuff used often to make tufty bedspreads. It's a soft furry plush. A remit is a payment of some sort. And is always happy for your sketches Willem. If you don't feel like making a story of them get DG to do it. He is a wonderful collaborator. Just ask cc or the .
Also since the post is up I loved the okapi --I am glad they are not too accessible but like you I am not thrilled they are in the Congo---a place not safe for man or beast.

Hi Elektra and thanks for the answers. So where should I go look for chenille? Remember to imagine me as a visitor from Pluto ...
No, no money for teaching the kids art ... yet. Except for the presents. But I'm going to ask for some this year ...
OK so I have an idea for you. Let me finish off a bunch of sketches of various fantasy characters in poses and put them in backgrounds with a few weird details and then see if Dmitri can make a story that makes sense of everything how does that sound?
I'll check out my Post page now!

Those chenille thingies would be either in tobbaco shops for pipe cleaners or in craft shops.
Great news about your sketches.

Hi Willem
What I meant by remit was do you have to teach them to some sort of agreed lessons plans or do you get to devise your own?
loved articles, especially to see some of your garden and also the idea of have a patterned butt so that your kids could follow you more easily through a forest tickled me, what beautiful creatures
obviously improper stuff is not appropraite for the children but as we are all adults here, go on, do tell

Hi Peanut! No, no lesson plans ... not much of a lesson-based appreach; I give them ideas and references and let them choose what to do and then guide them as they do it.
I'm glad you like the Post articles!
There are just plenty of unadorned female human and fairy bodies in one of the books.
For interest's sake ... are we all adults here? I mean are kids allowed to join h2g2 these days? I have some barbarian warrior sketches Dmitri might use for story ideas but one is a tad gruesome, but does perhaps suggest a dramatic tale.

You still have to be 16 to join here and I can't imagine that your sketch would break any house rules for being a tad gruesome

Nope, no kids, so PaperKid's account is still just waiting for her. She's used h2g2 for research for school reports, though.
