I wrote this for The Post just before the site went down.
I'd now like to enter it for Peer Review as I am happy with it.
This is my all-time favourite film.

Hey GB- loved the review smiley - smiley I completely agree with Jimi- get someone to pick this one up right away smiley - biggrin
Couple of things though- just typing or spelling points as far as I can see:
In the White House Section- chagrin, not chagrain.
In "The Message"- decipher, not decypher (also in "Personal Opinion")
Actually, while I went through it again, I thought I might like to know a little more about the conversation Ellie and her father have on Vega. I've never watched the film before, so I can't really comment on the content, but it would be nice to know exactly what the point of her getting to Vega is.
Apart from that, it's a great article. In fact, I'm off to watch the film right now smiley - biggrin

In the first paragraph, you wrote, "Sagan's novel of the same name, provided inspiration for this film, directed superbly by Robert Zemeckis."
That first comma doesn't belong.
In the last paragraph, tendency is spelled incorrectly.

Gnomon - time to move on

This is a good review of the film.

Your description of the journey does not make it clear that no time at all passed on earth while she was gone. This was an important point and the reason why no-one believed she had gone.

I know it's gone in, but a couple of points:

- I think the cast list would be better in a separate section rather than footnotes (as, after following the first one, you may not follow any others, but there's one which has useful information - VLA= etc.).
- You could mention (perhaps in a footnote!) the controversy caused by using real footage of Clinton.

I've not heard about this, would you like to elaborate?

Well, of course, I can't put any links in, can I?

I tried a quick search on google using 'Jodie Foster Clinton Contact' (the Jodie is necessary to distinguish between this search and the death of Vince Foster and I had to add the Foster bits in the first place because 'Clinton Contact' just gave me loads of stuff about Lewinsky!). There wasn't anything really authoritative, but there's a link to an article on parascope which seems to have the main facts. I seem to recall the reaction being a little more 'pointed' at the time.

Anyway, basically Zemeckis didn't seek prior approval. His view was that the President's image is in the public domain and he can neither permit nor deny its use. White House view was this went beyond established First Amendment rights. Charles Ruff, a White House spokesman sent a sternly worded letter. No legal action was considered, but this was apparently intended as a shot across the bows.

Thanks for that....
Does anyone else think this information should be included as part of the film review?
