Sad, Mad or Bad? - I always wanted to be a dino, but alas, I'm just old.

This is a very good article which talks about depression, and in particular, focuses on how it affects students as they leave for college. It's not written by me, but I'm submitting it because I think it's awfully good, and it hasn't yet been submitted.

Great Entry.

SCOUTS ATTENTION PLEASE: You can't go wrong with this one. It's already in good format, well researched, informative not fictional.

I my opinion it's a 'mown lawn' (trying to translate a german paraphrase to english) even for a SubEd.

Reading the Entry thouroughly again, I have found some first person wording "... I have found to be useful ..." . This could be changed to third person easily, without any loss of information. Besides that, I still think it's a good one.

Inanna has a theory - it could be bunnies.

I've edited the entry slightly to remove the one "I" which I found in the text - the other is part of a subheading - "So what if I am depressed?" and meant as a rhetorical question. Again, I can change this if the Guide Editors feel it appropriate.

Thanks again for the kind comments. I've got a few more pieces written in similar style, one on sex and students; another on self injury and a third on "adjusting to living back home with your parents after a semester or two away at college" (OK, it needs a catchier summary, but that's the gist of things.) - I'll upload those too once I have some free time.

Heh. And I'm not even one of 'em. I've reached that stage of complete and utter insanity and panic, otherwise known as "Final year PhD student". But I do write for the student mag in my spare time. Hence the emphasis on the student side.

Depressing college students.... let's see. Dress in black. Listen only to the Smiths and the Cure. Pale faces, as they never see the sunlight.

Equally depressing college students: Dress smartly. Turn up on time for all their lectures and hand in coursework three weeks early. Plan a nice career in the finance industry. Vote Conservative. And are the future of this country. *Shudders*

A couple of h2g2 style points (GuideML) you may like to utilise

Your subheadings should be enclosed with Insert the subheading Nothing else is needed

Where you quote people, enclose the quote with the text

This is from the subs style quide

Blockquotes are used to indent text and are particularly useful for quoting chunks of text, poems, and song lyrics. Make sure the quote is italicised, to distinguish the passage from the surrounding text, and delete any extraneous inverted commas. We wouldn't want to overdo it, would we? Close the italic tags, then follow the quote with a line break and a hyphen and then name the person who said or wrote the quote. The title of the person can go on the next fine if it is a particularly long one.

Thus: The most striking of all the impressions I have found since I left London a month ago is of the strength of this African national consciousness. In different places it takes totally different forms, but it is happening everywhere. The wind of change is blowing through this continent. Wether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact.
- Harold Macmillan, First Earl of Stockton former English Prime Minister

Note that the tag puts in spaces above and below the text so there is no need to put in extra tags; indeed, treat tags like specialised tags.

Thanks for the Subheader info - I've edited the article accordingly. I looked at the blockquote style, and felt that while that was very apt for quotations from authors, statesmen etc, I'd rather keep the short, informative quotes from doctors that are referenced in the article as part of the main paragraphs rather than having them stand out.

Though if it were to be insisted that this is H2G2 style requirements that any quotations from another person need to be spaced out in that way, then of course, I will do so. The quotations cited were given in phone conversations for the express purpose of this article, rather than being great "words of wisdom" from generations past.

Thanks again.

KKI
