Apparently the cookie has a seven-day shelf life now

It was your thread that made me notice. I'd still like it to stop!

I am now..
I'll pass this on to the technical team when I'm home from work. FWIW I don't get chucked out every week, on either my home or work PC.
Mina, what browser do you use?

Just in case they are, here's a good reason for extending the life of the cookie.
I mostly access h2g2 at home on my (relatively secure) wired home connection, but I'll often come here on my laptop via a public wi-fi, and the login page isn't https. I don't like logging in to anything on a public connection if the login page doesn't have that extra 's'. If the cookie didn't expire every seven days that problem wouldn't arise.

It's true, the cookie lasts a week.
When we first relaunched it lasted about a month, but people were concerned because there was (at the time) no log out button. It seemed to be popular opinion then to have the cookie last one week.
We're finishing a new login/out system at the moment which'll have a "remember me" check box and should also have a self-expiring cookie

Aha signs of life. I don't know what a self expiring cookie is, and I hadn't noticed lack of a log out button as I never do it, but that seems to be something urgent for those on shared computers?
How long for the new system?

We're alpha testing the new system now
It's being expanded and improved to take "future developments" into account

Well I could pretend that was intentional and ironical or something, but I pushed the wrong button
Um, any chance we can have the thing back where when we log in we go back to the page we were on when we clicked login? Currently it takes us back to our PS.

Can't remember where the other thread was, but the problem I was having accessing h2g2 (pages loading really slowly, or loading as blank pages) is the same today from some public access wifi, so that rules out my previous internet connection. Could still be my mac's cache or something. Or the cat gut cables between NZ and the UK

We'll hopefully be testing some new code soon that should in theory solve a lot of the speed issues we've been getting.
