How do I make my account go away?
waldo Started conversation Dec 21, 1999
Yes, um, right.
My account. It's lovely, really, but I'm finished with it now. And I'd like for it to go away.
How does this occur? I've found no obvious method, having gone through the confirmation e-mail and every related page that I can find on the site. In fact, I'm feeling a bit muddled now, having to post this to a forum, rather than be able to simply contact an admin.
So, er, yes: How do I erase myself?

Last I heard there was no way to erase yourself, sorry.

Um. You can't make it go away. But it doesn't matter to us if it hangs around. Maybe you'll come back and re-visit it for nostalgic reasons. Why do you want it to go away anyway? The *only* post you have ever made is to ask how to make your account go away...

No way to delete an account???
Not that *I* would ever ... but don't they take up space, even
if they don't put anything in their home page? And what if a
researcher spangles their page like a christmas tree and never
comes back? I thought I saw someone writing numbers on the back
of an envelope in another thread here, and worrying about user
space.

Text doesn't take up much space, graphics are of course another thing, but as the other thread says, we don't keep graphics on our servers. A Researcher may well go away and come back again, so we won't delete anything.

After all, the delete button only hides the file, it is still there. I suppose to delete something you could edit it to nothing.
If you try deleting someone then all the links start going bad in the database... I know far too much about this, we have a school library system, and it'd be -far- easier to leave everyone on it, just preventing books from going out to them.

Update on this. You can make it all go away if you *really* want to, by emailing [email protected].

What happens to forums and the like now, then? Do your forum entries disappear or what? I think this could be a bad idea, personally. Tell me how you get on.

We've never been asked to use it; which is good.. but I believe that the thread contributions would stay...

That's good. So it's not just automated then. Good luck when someone -does- try to delete themselves.

In my case I don't really want to go away, it's just that there are two of me!
I was trying to log on to a different machine and forgot which e-mail address I had used for h2g2, and discovered that I had another identity on h2g2.
I really don't need the second, newer identity, since I don't make as much use of the first as I should.
Thanks,
Brian

So its true.... if you ask the guide you'll find someone with the same problem (and hopefully a solution) to the one you have!
I've just gone and created a second (unwanted) account for myself in my quest to get registerd. I also found it very frustrating not to have a simple e-mail address to talk to if things went wrong. (after all, I don't think I could contribute to a forum until I'd registered, and I needed to use the forum to get help on registering, but I couldn't use the foru, until I was registered so needed to register to get access to the forum to ask about how to get my registration to work.....
At which point I gave up in a puff of logic.

I think emailing [email protected] will get to something - you'll have to see what Peta says...

You can change your email address from your homepage, in the user details section. You change the email, put in a password. Then go to your old email address and click on the email you'll receive from us. Then it'll recognise you under your new email address.
Any problems, let me know on my homepage..

Following today's attack on h2g2's site I'm tempted to remove myself from it.
How do I make my account go away?
The Cow Posted Jun 8, 2000
What? What's this 'attack' then?
I know h2g2 was down yesterday (for an annoyingly long time) but that's because they were upgrading to a new system...
Is there something else we should know?
