How long do journal entries last?? Do they just randomly dissappear after a certain amount of time or do they go away when you get too many??

So far they seem to last forever, though only the latest 5 are shown on your homepage. I don't know if there are any plans to change it.

Yes you can put pictures on h2g2 user pages (but not in journals or forums). There's some info here http://www.h2g2.com/A187355#UPLOAD
And there's some more info on the PICTURE tag/command here http://www.h2g2.com/A184961
hope it helps

At the moment there isn't a pressing need for space, so we don't need to make the old ones go away - and I think it's quite nice to go back and reminise..my first thread - Ahhhh.

but do I need to be backing up my journal entries so that in 3 years or so I can still go back and look at my old entries.

No - they will always be available to you at h2g2. We have a policy of not deleting anything, threads, user pages, journals.
