A Conversation for Guppies

Guppies and Sexual Designation

Great Article....but I have to add a bit.(Not that any of this is relivent!)

I raised guppies at on time in my life and found an interesting point of fact at the time. Do not try to keep all male or all female fish in order to avoid propogation. It doesn't work!

In a tank of fish all of the same sex, a certain percentage will change their gender.(too many years, I don't remember the percentage!smiley - sadface)

I suppose this contributes to their success in the wild.

Also, there is a north American variety, not colorful in the least, yet quite plentiful in the streams of the southern US.smiley - smiley

Thanks, NM!
Unfortunately, now my article has been edited, I can't alter or add to it.
Your comments will remain part of the article, though!
They're wonderful little creatures, aren't they?smiley - fish

Yes, they are! When I was a lad of 14 I had 10 ten gallon and 1 twenty gallon aquarium set up for them! My parents' entire laundry room! You name the variety, I had it!('course that was 30 years agosmiley - winkeye)

Just as well my info couldn't be included....I'd hate to have to find the article I read some 30 years ago on the subject! I did prove it correct, though. Made crossbreeding kinda fun.smiley - winkeye

Stick a handfull of Halfblack males in a tank together and after a while one of them would produce 4 or 5 young. All with strong Halfblack tendencies. A little patience from there was sure to produce very acceptable results!(I use Halfblacks as an example because they were always my favorites)

I tried my hand at Mollies at the same time...never had much success with them. They were a bit more sensitive to incorrect water Ph...and I didn't have the patience at the time to fight with it!

I never successfully bred any mollies.
I have glo-lites & tetras in with my guppies, but they never seem to breed.
They eat the baby guppies though.smiley - sadface
I haven't got room for seperate tanks.

I know this is an old thread but perhaps someone will read this and get back to me!

I'm thinking of getting an aquarium and was told that guppies were a good fish to keep. Is this the case and, also, from what I've read it sounds like they have so many offspring so quickly you'd have more fish than you'd know what to do with in a 10 gallon tank! Should beginners avoid them? Someone please help!?
