My favourite composer is Thomas Tallis; he died nearly 400 years ago. Will anyone still remember the Spice Girls in 400 years time? I think not. The Beatles maybe, but the Spice Girls?

Following the huge hype surrounding the Spice Girls, Robbie Williams and all the other marketing fabrications of recent years, I propose a new law banning the writing or publication of any biography, "greatest hits" album, analysis or career summary until 25 years after the death of the performer concerned. I would accept an amendment to allow limited publication after 25 years in the business, I guess - Sir Neville Marriner is worthy of a biography by now.

I remember the Channel 4 vote which placed Robbie Wiliams ahead of Mozart in the "most influential musician of the last millennium" category. Leaving aside the fact that this was, to be blunt, the most complete bxxxxxks, it seems unlikely that any balanced opinion of the influence or status of a musician could be formed until they have been performing for some ocnsiderable time.

I guess the Rolling Stones would qualify after 35+ years.
