I know that a very large volcano that destroyed the island of thesa (I don't know the actual spelling and even a little vague about the name) exploded during the time of the ancient Greeks. This left the island in a much reduced ark shape. This produced a tidal wave that killed off lots of the Greeks. Is it possible that this is where Atlantis came from?
Plato, who wrote what we know about Atlantis, learnt about Atlantis from a merchant who heard from a priest. Perhaps there was an error in the translation.

Yes, I think it was called Santorini, but in pre-Greek classical world (c.1400bc?)
Alternatively, some have theorized recently that Atlantis could
be a mythologized retelling of the flooding of the Black Sea.
It's not difficult to imagine how an account of a town city or island being flooded by a newly-created sea (as when the land-bridge between the Mediterranean and Black seas disappeared), or devastated by volcanic activity, becomes warped into the story of a whole civlization or continent.
