I've been using linux on and off for about 8 years now, but please don't expect me to be any kind of expert. In fact, the reason I'm joining here now is that I can't get my linux box online

it won't connect through the router and crappy AOL won't provide tech support . If I didn't get AOL free then I most certainly wouldn't be using it now
. It knows it's on a network, and that, but it won't connect to the net. I've even switched off the firewall and that didn't help

If it's a standard wired Ethernet connection it usually never fails to work, without configuration. Which distro is it though?

Odd. I have a router - I never have to configure anything to get the 'net to work on Linux.

It's strange, my win 2k box works fine, my dads win xp box won't connect through the router and neither will this linux box I've built
