Perhaps they come from some ancient culture which utilized balls to bear things, or perhaps boiling pots of balled bear were heated over ancient fires (not doubt any more ancient that the peach pit using Pheonicians) Or it could be more witchery spread by that poisonous tomato speading heathen, Johnny Appleseed.

I've always assumed they bear balls. And it bears mentioning that Johnny Appleseed himself frequently would plant ball bearings instead of his namesake in the yards of people he didn't particularly like. Buzz Aldrin, for example, has a ballbearing bush (or is it a Ball bearing a Bush?) in his yard to this day. Or maybe it was yesterday.
On an unrelated note, or rather a note that is related to the sublect, but not the previous paragraph, did you know the phrase "I come bearing gifts" was originally "I come bearing gifts," but it very well could have been "I come bearing balls", or even "I come balling barons."
Finally, I just wanted to say as a bit of advice, don't ever try to ball a live bear. It ain't pretty.
