If it is true that the BBC are closing down h2g2, as it is appears to be, then I've a lot of work to do. I've got to take copies of all my entries. I have most of them backed up, but I still have to do the last few.

The eds just made an announcement that they'll make an announcement later.
I'm shocked and very, very sad.

Where has the announcement come from - the one the Eds referred to I mean?

Hmm. Well, they did say they were closing down 6music, but so many people protested, including the Prime Minister (Gordon Brown at the time) that they didn't in the end.
And I refer you to the title of the Announcement of only last Thursday:
<>
I'm also apprehensive, nonetheless.

"However, H2G2 is unusual. It is a pre-existing community that the BBC brought into its fold, not a community that the BBC set up from scratch. So rather than closing it, we've decided to explore another option.
This process has been referred to elsewhere as the "disposal" of H2G2. I'll admit this is not a great choices of words, but what is means is that we'll be looking for proposals from others to take on the running of H2G2."

I don't have much hope that that will happen.
I'm not taking it on myself as it would take too much of my time.
If h2g2 was just the community, we could move it to facebook tomorrow. If it was just the Guide, then we could set it up as a read-only site easy enough. There used to be a site called GeoCities which allowed you to set up your own content - I'm sure there's still something similar. But what we need is a system of conversations and editable pages. I'm not up to designing and programming something like that at the moment.
I think I'll have to just take a back seat and see if anybody else comes up with a working system.

OK, I have e-mail address, phone number or Facebook account for all my close friends here.
No reason to hang around, so.

There is reason to hang around, Gnomon.
This place hasn't been shuttered yet. We don't yet know what will happen.
I understand you've got other issues to attend to but just ing on us is quite disheartening.
I'm not giving up on this place until the final >FOOP!<.

Should I bother looking for bugs in a new system, when it seems likely the new system will be scrapped in a few months' time?
And why write or sub-edit when it is all going down the tubes?
I'll keep an eye on this place to see what happens, but I'm not going to join in any discussion as to what happens. Too many opposing views.
I've had good times here, learned to write, made lots of good friends, but I think the time has come to call it a day.

Wow... this is very saddening. Folks just jumping ship at the first sign of distress.
I do hope this is just a sign of shock and y'all will reconsider. If this place sinks, so be it, but if everyone just abandons it then there's no saving it.

I'd be lost without h2g2!
Why spend so much effort on a new look h2g2 & the ditch it? Or perhaps because it's costing so much, higher powers that be want to stop any more expenditure...

Vip Posted Jan 24, 2011
It depends on the alternative. If the new h2g2 seems like a good place to go, then yes.
At the moment there simply isn't enough information to make an informed decision about the prospects. In the mean time, I can understand why a lot of people have stopped working on what we have.
