h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

To the weathermen's great surprise, a thaw has set in. Yesterday morning at 8, they were still predicting freezing temperatures until the end of the week. By 12, the snow and ice was starting to melt. School is still cancelled across the country until Thursday, though.

My gas central heating started working again of its own accord this morning. I can't work out what caused it to suspend itself during the cold spell (the hot water system was OK). Sticky thermostat, maybe?

Yesterday didn't get above freezing but we had a covering of snow again overnight, as forecast, and it is milder this morning. If it freezes again it will be a nightmare.

So, how many members of the committee were able to make it to that meeting - given the conditions?

Last week here, it got down to -13C for a few nights then warmed to -9C and now its back to -6C nights, which is about normal. Days, it gets up to about +12C

There are some here who have built their homes on the north sides of hills - which no amount of insulation or heating will remedy, I do not think.
