Interestingly, chillis appear to be bred specifically to increase the concentrations of their defence chemicals.
Speaking of human/plant interdependence...is it *really* a coincidence that Colly Weed followed humans out of Ethiopia? And hasn't life got better (politically, socially, materially) since Africans introduced it to culturally-important Europeans and European-Americans in the 1950's and 60's?
Hmm...there's someone I must correspond with on this.

Actually...I'm reasonably serious on this theory, but Gnomon's journal is not the right place for it.
Anyone who wishes to contribute/discuss...see my e-mail addy on my PS.

There's a beautiful Moorish legend from Andalucia that tells of a Moor who married a beautiful Scandinavian princess. She didn't take to Spain very well and spent most of her time staring out the window, pining for the snows of her homeland. He planted almond trees all over every mountain and hillside that was visible from her window, and through the winter nobody was at all sure why. When the spring blossoms came and fell on the ground, though, the landscape was transformed into a white mountainscape, supposedly just like the lands she had left behind.
I assume they lived happily ever after.

Oh, lovely.
And we forget about all that multicultural interplay. You can betcha that some Moorish Colly Weed got north, too.
