Public Experimental Labyrinths

A funny thing occured to my while shopping today.
For some reason the supermarket management decided to rearrange and renovate the place over a period of about a week, meaning that everything is not only in a different place, but the shelves are standing around and complete disorder, sometimes with a distance of about a foot between the shelves.
Maybe this is a German thing. This country isn't exactly famous for the customer-friendliness of stores. Still, the more time I had to spend (inevitably) in this labyrinth, the more I got to think about how a lab rat must feel in one of those silly experimental labyrinths (cheese at the other end of the corridor; really).
I became more convinced that I was partaking in some sort of "stupid human trick" while watching disoriented elderly people walking around in a disoriented manner and generally looking more disoriented than I was. Is it just me being paranoid or is it possible that in order to prevent cruelty to animals supermarkets are being used to do the same kind of experiment using elderly people and unsuspecting students?
