A Conversation for The Phoenix
The Phoenix as a comet in literature
Luthien_Starlight Started conversation Nov 4, 2007
I was interested to see the argument put forward here taken up in literature: 'Post Captain' by Patrick O'Brian, chapter 10, page 327 in the Harper Collins paperback edition.
In that book (set in 1802) there is a prediction that the phoenix would return in 1805 and wikipedia confirms the return of comet Encke in that year.
Could you possibly give the source for your original article.
Herodotus in book 2 of his histories (chapter 73 of his account of Egypt) also mentions the phoenix and his account gives a period of every 500 years.
