Actually, you got it backwards. Freeride boards are semi-symmetrical, with the rider generally placed towards the back. This allows for better "all-terrain" riding and is the design used for most big-mountain riding.

Freestyle boards tend to be symmetrical or "twin", with the rider placed at the middle, allowing for riding regular and fakie. This is the style of board normally used in halfpipe and freestyle riding and tends to be shorter. In other words, the typical rider with two boards, a freeride and a freestyle, will have a shorter freestyle board, making it easier to whip around during tricks.

The BBC are so lame at the moment!
