While in some areas of the universe barking refers to canine speak,the terminology has been lost somewhat.'Barking'(on Earth) actually refers to the clothing of the outer layer of the wooded plant.If one tries to coat a large plant in the incorrect covering,it will, quite simply,die.Hence,'barking up the wrong the tree' refers to the dressing of ones outdoor plant or plants in the wrong fashion.

Sorry, no. Barking is a town in Essex, England - a county also notable for the number of its boroughs with tree-related names: Braintree, Tiptree, Brentwood, Hatfield Broad Oak, Nine Ashes. Therefore, a traveller lost in Essex is said to be "Heading for Barking up the wrong Tree".

No, rustling leaves are a damned nuisance; I've lost so much livestock to rustling leaves! Remember those National Geographic photographs of goats in trees? they've been rounded up and rustled by leaves! All of my goats have been trained to eat their rustlers, this is the only way goat farmers can control this antisocial crime.

Barking is also the site (damned nearly) of Barking Reach Power Station - at which scenic spot I was allowed to erect a stunningly ugly concrete-box cooling tower. Stick yer 'ead aht the windah and see if it's still standing, will ya?
