Tachyons have extremely good lawyers. The law clearly states "you may not accelerate beyond the speed of light".
"Ahah" - say the tachyons, when asked to explain themselves - "but can you *prove* we accelerated beyond the speed of light? What if we've *always* been travelling faster than c?".
"Oh." says the universe. "Fair point. Case dismissed."
Sean.

I refuse to go to a dentist, but can I turn this thread to Higgs. I hear one of the accelerator rings (CERN of FERMILAB I think) is soon going to get to 120 GeV, the lower theoretical limit of the Higgs particle. Will we find out what mass really is? And can you make tea out of it?

You can only make tea from a Higgs boson if you mass-ticate it!
Note to PG Tips: it doesn't come in a wacky tetrahedral bit of paper.

What sort of whacky PGTrips have you been making tea from?

Arrrgh. Physics is hard. I think I've just failed the first year of my Physics degree.
Not always ...

Under certain lab conditions the speed of light has been slowed down to a very relaxed 30 or 40 MPH. There are a number of papers about this on the web - search using SLOW SPEED OF LIGHT or similar.
