You might want to start by creating an introduction on your personal space to let people know about your interests. There'll be an 'edit page' button on there somewhere so you can do that.
I see that Feisor has given you some links towards places to get started, and if you're looking to get involved in conversations there are loads of them already underway in Askh2g2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A148907 and Misc Chat http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/MiscChat or you can start a fresh one there where people are likely to see it. The ones you started on your personal space won't be seen by anyone who doesn't go there, so that's probably why you were having difficulty.
