Now that's where you're wrong. It looks better, tastes better, and it's actually chocolate!

I am not wrong.

White chocolate is better.

Oh but you are. White chocolate is but a pale imitation of real chocolate. You can tell this simply by looking at it.

Or taking the other view, dark chocolate is a pale imitation of white chocolate- but with nasty extra stuff added so its a different colour.

Not pale at all - the clue is in the colour.

And the stuff that's added is what we call 'chocolate'. This is what gives dark chocolate its chocolatey flavour. White 'chocolate' has no business calling itself such.

It has every right to be called chocolate, since thats what it is.

This is not what Ændr said - it contains none of your defining element of chocolate, cocoa. And she's the chef so she should know!

So what should you call it, huh?

(so I shan't be offering you any of my whitechocolate caramel squares which I bake from time to time)

White 'chocolate' as opposed to white chocolate.

(And a white chocolate caramel square sounds like a waste of an otherwise perfectly good caramel square.)

Nuh uh. White chocolate as opposed to white 'chocolate' - thats how they sell it in all the major supermarkets!

OK quick quiz here in order to decide on the nicest colour chocolate (although really Joanna has already proven this). Right how many nice tasting food stuffs can you think of which are a sludgy and bitter brown colour? Umm...none, the only thing which is a similar colour is burnt toast or mud and neither of those are particularly appetising. Now think of food stuffs which are white and nice tasting? To name but a few we have white candy mice, milk, milk shakes, white wine, cheese, mashed potato, freshly baked bread, apple without the skin, biscuits, cream, cookies and I believe my defining point, Ben and Jerry's Icecreamsmiley - smiley

A matter of tastes

Tinkerbell has almost painted herself into a corner by mentioning wine. Which is better wine - red or white? No-one can definitely answer that question, it depends on the mood - just as chocolate does. White chocolate is good to indulge a sudden craving for sugar, but dark (plain) chocolate has a far stronger, bitter (and in my own opinion slightly more pleasant) flavour.

If you are a person of means, though, try and get your mitts on a box of those white and drak chocolate seashells. They are probably the pinnacle of modern chocalateering.

Oh, and another thing. You said that there aren't many brown or black foodstuffs. Does that mean my roast potatoes aren't supposed to turn that colour? Or my chicken, for that matter?

Ahh but one can have a clearish position on red and white wine too- white is better, in the event that some drunk person spills it on you, it doesn't stain smiley - bigeyes

Sorry I don't think they're meant to be black...

Anyway I haven't painted myself into a corner at all as I don't like red wine so therefore it can be perfectly equal to dark chocolatesmiley - smiley Which even you admit is bitter and acky (ok so you might not have said the acky part but I could tell you meant it) so if you're going to eat sweet chocolate you might as well eat the sweetest which is obviously white chocolate. It also must have more milk as it's white so it's healthier tosmiley - doctor

As I said, I prefer the bitter taste of dark chocolate; if you're looking for a sweeter, creamier dark chocolate, try those made by Lindt*. As for the health issue, chocolate wasn't designed to be healthy - the Aztecs wanted it to be a blow-your-head off strong, bitter drink.

*Do not mix this up with "lint".

So evidently dark chocolate is old fashioned and dullsmiley - winkeye
Besides if it's not meant to be healthy then you might as well have the sweetest and most sugary white chocolate in order to get full benefitsmiley - smiley

Of course

That's true, but only if you like sweet chocolate. Once again, it comes back down to a difference in tastes.
