We're very close to it, aren't we. Almost no-one these days can start a sentence without a 'So', even people you wouldn't think would do it, such as those invited to take part in an In Our Time programme on Radio 4.

Will 'So' eventually become 'So, like,'?

I had an English teacher in high school who had an epiphany inspired by a sassy student. She realized "So!" is the perfect retort. It negates any response. It accepts the possible veracity of whatever point you're trying to make while simultaneously dismissing the point altogether.

I know you're referring to a different usage of so, that of a sort of introductory filler word or interjection, but I just thought I'd share that observation.
