h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Well well. The BBC has made an updated episode of Open All Hours to be broadcast on Boxing Day http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01my79b If it works as well as Rock and Chips did (the same sort of thing - reviving a popular sitcom, but in the other direction, timewise) I'll be very happy. It's such a shame that John Sullivan died. I thought Rock and Chips was showing a lot of promise, at least as an occasional special one-off. I don't know if it would have worked as a full-length sitcom series.

I've got high hopes for Still Open All Hours - most of the original cast are in it, aged, obviously (the last episode of Open All Hours was in 1984 I think) although the absence of Arkwright leaves a massive hole, and it's written by Roy Clarke who wrote the original series. And I see there's a part for Johnny Vegas I'm very keen to see how that works

A pity it's only 30 minutes long - I'm sure they could have got a good hour's-worth out of something like this. Or perhaps Roy Clarke is simply empty. That bloke was a writing machine for decades - every single episode of Last of the Summer Wine (268), Open All Hours (26) and Keeping Up Appearances(44), and those are only his three most well known credits. That's the kind of output that drove poor old Spike Milligan to a breakdown.
