I really don't think the words 'Veterans Day' should be preceded by 'Happy'. That's not exactly concomitant with the tenor of the day, is it. I suppose you could say that it commemorates a happy occasion - the ending of a war, but there have been several wars since the first Armistice Day in 1918, and the first time it was marked, a year later, none of which ended on November 11th, and as I understand it Remembrance Day has always been about, well, remembering. Dignified, solemn reflection, and giving thought to those who didn't come back.

'Happy' doesn't belong with that.

It certainly does not seem thinkable that you'd see 'Happy' in front of this.

You'd think so, but it's been trending all morning. Before I saw my first 'Happy Veterans Day' tweet this morning I saw another one saying 'Happy Monday'. I think a lot of people have lost the meaning of that word and the judgement that goes with knowing when to use it, and when not to.

Veterans day replaced Armistice day in the US. Veterans day is to celebrate and give appreciation to living veterans. Memorial day is to commemorate those that died.

On Veterans day, people go see parades. On Memorial day people go to cemeteries.

(On both, I typically just stay home, watch TV and enjoy a Monday off.)

Interesting.

After a little research (ie, reading the Wikipedia article), it seems that Memorial Day's origins lie in the American Civil War.
