ICQ is short for "I Seek You"
It's a lot like AOL's instant messaging with the buddy list, except for the fact that it is free.
So it's a program that will show you immediately who of your friends is on the internet and who's not (as long as you're on, that is).

oh contrare* AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) is also free**. And, while I'm no fan of AOL I tend to prefer it in a way....

**you don't need to use AOL as your ISP either

Ok, I've never used AOL's IM, so I guess I really don't know what I'm talking about, which is not unusual 
So, what is the big advantage?

well I've never really used ICQ for more than a couple of days so I'm not trying to run it down. I just found AIM a bit simpler interface-wise. As far as I know there isn't that much advantage to using AIM (can ICQ do speach though?)
I think ICQ has a larger userbase but at the same time AIM users can talk to people on AOL so it all evens out.
What I'm really saying is it's all just personal taste I guess.
