Hi Sasha
Thank you for writing up this interesting entry. You have a way of writing which enables me to be with you
I wonder what the 'debauched conduct' was?
I would love to spend a day gazing in admiration at illuminated manuscripts and marvel at the calligraphy skills of the authors.
We have EGEs on the River Mersey A61942935 and Henry VIII A2666216 if you'd like to link to them

Thanks GB Glad you enjoyed reading. I enjoy donning my metaphorical Ford Prefect hat and going around sights with my notepad
Yes, calligraphy is superb - I'm nowhere near as good as monks, etc, but I do enjoy using felt tip calligraphy pens occasionally
I've added in more links and a footnote about the debauched conduct

that sounds like a very interesting place to visit!
I have just 2 points:
I can't quite imagine how much of the buildings are still visible today. Is it only the foundations? Some walls and pillars? There ust be something left if they were able to arrange the gardens around the remains? And how much is left of the newer houses?
The 2nd thing is that I was puzzled about your mention of a tower being built for the abbot. Was this a usual thing? What did he do with the tower? Live in there? Or was it a bell tower for the church?

If it helps
"A tower was built for the Abbot to live in."
This was quite normal
It was defencive if the Scots raided or the locals were more revolting than usual thz Abbott his staff, cash, holy relics etc could hold out for days or weeks in a tower (the entry was normally on the second floor and reached by a disposable staircase which was set fire to keep the attackers out They sat it out until the besiegers got bored or relief arrived.
Good work, excellent entry
