well..... i agree with the "The world is NOT screwed up because there is no God. The world is screwed up because we made it that way" statement, BUT i still believe there is no "god", especially not in the christian/jewish/islamic sense. Believing there is no god is not an immature way of looking at things, it's merely a logical way of looking at things. Some people (me included), simply cannnot except things that are told to them unless they have seen proof of this for themselves. Of course, you can argue you need "faith", but there has to be some base to the faith. Pure and total faith seems to me like blindly following something that you (not you personally, anyone) know little about. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I, for one, cannot believe something simply because a lot of other people do as well.
Some of my beliefs about religion are (and please accept that these are definately not meant as an insults, but are observations i've made by talking to believers i know, and, among other things, movies).
A) Most people need something to believe in, or else to them, the world and existence really has no meaning, and is purely random (which is what i believe). Some people cannot accept this.
B) Some things have not yet been explained by science, and thus, a lot of people seeing the need to explain everything, will simply assosciate these things with a diety.
C)While i do not believe in an "All powerful" god, i don't have a superiority complex, i still believe that there could be more powerful beings out there. (little green men, if ya like), and that they may "possibly" have created the earth, and even it's inhabitants, but i still view last part as unlikely. (notice unlikely, as i have no proof either way, and i would be following blind faith if i believed totally that they have not done it, thus i would be hypocritical.
D) (This is a SERIOUS belief, and please treat it as such), i believe that aliens were the "gods" that were worshipped by the ancient civilisation, such as the Egyptians, Toltecs, Incas, Mayans (and thus, subsequently the Aztecs), and even the Greeks and pre-catholic Romans.
BTW! This is not a flame post, it is a serious debate to your argument.

I'm officially an Anglican/Protestant (confirmed and everything), but i'm not sure whether i'm a full blown aethiest, or just an Agnostic. I find pagan/wiccan beliefs VERY interesting, and also believe in Little Green Men (or greys, or whatever. There is SOMETHING out there).....
*confused*

officially Anglican, with Catholic tendancies. Sort of believes in "little green men". Only they're not green. Or even sort of man shaped...

That thing about the world being screwed up because blahblahblah...
Your world is what you make it. If you screw it up, then that's your own goddamn fault. If athiest are srewing their world up by worshipping false idols etc, then that'll be because they can't control their own life. Those that CAN control things, though, get on just fine.
You don't need an all-powerful god to make things better. Just an ounce of common sense, and a grip on reality.
Was that ok or have I missed a point?

who knows? I'm only thirteen, you can't expect me to actually *know* what I mean.

I think that point was pretty spot on. It's not just Aethiests that have contributed to messing the world up either....
I'm 16, and i still don't really know what i mean, most of the time. Its fun trying though.

Just like Galileo. A bit late, eh? Shouldn't take nearly a millenium for that to come - imagine if it took the same amount of time for the poor Germans to apologise for WW2? That wouldn't be accepted. But because xtianity has engrained itself as the mainstream thing, it can get away with anything. That is not good.

We keep begging our church youth-group leaders to let us watch the Life of Brian.
"It's not topical!"
"Yes it is! It's a lot more topical than Scream!"

If your religion falls over when a joke is made at its expense then it's not a very good religion.
Ours is still standing
Very, very funny
"He's not the Messiah! He's a very naughty boy!"
