Perhaps nice to have :
1) Polls / ratings - kind of thing you can also get at places like http://www.pollwizard.com - so people can create a poll having to do with an entry or to rate an entry.
2) Updates by email - once a conversation receives a new post, emails are sent to all those who subscribed for email updates on that particular convo. Or you could send a daily digest. Does look like you might need to place a few dedicated email servers for such a feature. People will probably understand you might want to print a small ad at the end of such an email to cover for the servers.

Quite a few researchers have set up polls in this way and simply included the HTML code in their homepage, or a separate page - like http://www.h2g2.com/A218819 for example...

Yes thanks Sniggly. Both of these features are on the 'to do list' - we hope to introduce new features on a regular basis...
