EF - How to practise music

I had a re-read of this collaborative effort I compiled many years ago. Still good! I'm proud of this one.

The topic came up recently for me and if I may I would like to insert two more comments, the first at the end of the 'General Advice' section:

Most practice time is wasted. This observation is subjective, but a walk outside any school practice rooms will reinforce it. What you hear is the equivalent of actors forcefully stammering their parts.

I would also like to add to the end of the next section, after 'Don't trudge; step lightly.' the following:

Slow down as danger (that is, a spot where you have stumbled once) approaches. Stop before, not after, making a mistake. This is perhaps the single most effective change you can make to your practising habits.

Many Thanks!

I see I have mentioned stammering in a footnote; If the above insertions are made, we should delete footnote 6 "It amounts to studiously acquiring a stammer." I think the point is important enough to put in the main text.

Thank you GB! You got them right except that the blockquote went into the end of "Good Company" rather than the end of "General Advice" where I think it should go.

There's a header "General Advice" followed by several subheaders, which I assumed were all part of "General Advice" so I put that added quote at the end of the last section. I am now wondering whether you mean you want it to go after the header "General Advice" section but before the subheader "Step Lightly"... anyway I've put it there, sorry if it's still wrong, perhaps it would be more clear if you'd tell me where it needs to go "prior" to the section!smiley - biggrin

Thank you GB, that is right now! I was not observing the distinction between headers and subheaders.

Sorry to keep chewing at this, but it does seem now that footnote 2 is in the wrong place

Knowing what is likely to go wrong is valuable information, to be exploited, not resented!

It really belongs as the last footnote, which currently redirects to it.
