can I save my journal entries to a cd rom? I really want them for my grandchildren to see at some time. Also I am worried that I may take up too much space in Hootoo, if that is possible. i would be very grateful for some advice about this.

Hi kifperran

The advice given to you in your earlier thread, F615?thread=426259, was correct - you can save your journals as text files and transfer them to a CD ROM but your contributions are quite safe here so there really isn't anything to worry about.

When you make a journal entry it is saved in the h2g2 database which is a computer with an enormous amount of memory. Each journal entry takes up very little space - much less than the same amount of text would take up on your PC (home computers are very wasteful of space). There is no limit to how much h2g2 memory you can use - no one is going to write to you to complain that you're near your maximum because there is no maximum.

The BBC make regular backup copies of the contents of the database so your journals will not be lost due to some technical accident.

Your words are as safe, or perhaps safer, with the BBC as they would be on a CD ROM. CDs don't remain readable forever, particularly if they're made at home.

Another drawback of making CD ROMs is that they're a bit fiddly to record (burn is the technical term) and you'd have to keep on making them.

If you have a CD burner and you really want to go ahead and save your journal entries there are people here on h2g2 that can help you but my advice would be to relax and trust in the BBC's backup system. Just make sure you write down your U number so that your grandchildren know where to look.

Thank you Amy. I will do as you say and forget about c.d. burning(there's technical). I am easily confused and had forgotten I had raised the question before.
smiley - cheers
