Great Western Lettuce (no.51) Just cut down the fags instead

Hello smiley - smiley

I seem to be having a lot of trouble accessing pages on this site lately. They just seem to take forever to appear, if at all, and it is beginning to get a bit tiresome. It has only been happening for a couple of weeks or so, but I have noticed a couple of other researchers mention this as well, so it might not just be me.

I can access other web sites without too much trouble, but here as I say, has really slowed down. Can you give me any advice about what I can do about it? Or is it just something that you guys are in the process of sorting out?

Thanks
GWL

Hi Great Western Lettuce,

We're sorry to hear that you, and a number of others, are having problems accessing h2g2. We're currently investigating; we believe that the problem lies within the central BBC network; the h2g2 servers and databases appear to be working well within capacity. This afternoon there were apparently a number of hung connections in the SQL box which may have slowed things down slightly; these have now been cleared so you may see an improvement in your the connection speed.

If you are still having problems over the weekend, you can draw attention to it by filling in this form:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/support/trace.html

and a member of the BBC internet technical team will investigate.

The slowness probilly caused by Chelsea flower show.

I am not 100% sure, but you could vote and see more on the BBCi website and BBCi digital. (push red button to acces on remote control)

the slowness started around same time.

it is just thought!?

Interesting idea! Do people who use BBC interactive TV use the same server type thingimies as us<?>

You are spot on though, it started and ended at exactly the same time as our slowness.

I do not know if use same the server, but BBCi website and H2G2 come thru same "pipeline" outside the BBC building.

the BBCi Chelsea website give a lot more webtraffic, than normal during the week.

still just idea!

I don't think it's so much the size of the pipe outside the building as the amount of water the BBC's servers can push through it...

please read correctly!

I am talking about
"pipeline" coming from inside (BBC) to outside (cyberspace).

H2G2\____"pipeline"_____"cyberspace"

Ok, I was making what I considered to be a midly witty comment. It was a joke. And anyway, it still makes sense, since I belive the point you are making is that the same pipe is used for both BBCi and h2g2.

Don't know about anyone else, but this morning - all seems well and good.

So whatever /whoever / however has fixed this.

Well, surely that flower show is over.
Unhappily, yesterday afternoon and evening
(U.S. East Coast time) were disastrous.
I resorted to bypassing H2G2 and emailing
researchers directly.

The flower show might be over, but he World Cup and Wimbledon are now in full swing, both of which are likely to affect traffic levels.
