I was beginning the dreaded Search For My First Post-College Job and found something that I think I could do. It's a job with a large intelligence agency coordinating their training bureau.
Although I haven't quite done what the job entails, I have experience in all the areas they're looking for. I've been running the PD's training bureau (de facto, not de jure) and have done very well, working only a few hours a week and still having plenty of time to take on projects from fellow employees who are overloaded. So I think it's logical to think that with more hours spent doing the job, more responsibility and a larger department wouldn't be too much of a challenge. I'm not supremely qualified, but I'm not unqualified either. My degree probably gives me a large boost in credibility as well, though my age may be more of a hindrance than a help. I'm hoping that due to the new attitude towards American Intelligence, they'll be more likely to want to get fresh new blood into the department. *crossed fingers*
Then I saw what it paid.
Suddenly, I felt like maybe I wasn't so qualified. It pays an obscene amount of money to start, and the high end of the pay scale is even *more* obscene, especially for my 1st real job. It was a real bubble-burster.
I'm going to try anyway, of course, because the worst thing they can say is "no" or maybe "hahahahahaha-no-hahahahahaha"...
But if I *did* get it...... SO exciting. I'd get to move to DC and work in a large pentagonal building (from what I infer, anyway, none of these places give up their exact locations). I could buy a house and pay off my student loans pretty quickly. And it would get me nicely far away from my family issues, while still being on the same continent and long distance wouldn't be too heinous. Too bad it snows there. Eugh! (Remember me in snow, Marv?
EXCITING and nerve-wracking at the same time!
Wish me luck, all!

One thing to consider, is if that job gets you all excited, but doesn't come through for you -- you could always apply for other, more entry-level jobs at the same place.
From what I know, they are huge sticklers for having every exact detail the job announcement says, and not just equivalent experience. But it's definitely very possible to start at an entry-level job and keep moving up.

Sounds great!
One thing though....if you work in that certain building and use the computer there to post on Hootoo, will we all be investigated?
Take the money and run!

It's not really snow in DC Sea. Nothing like what you saw in Wyoming.
Good luck!

sea, dear, I'm going to tell you upfront that those jobs tend to be hired for from within (my sister's Customs CID, and I get the scoop) because they want senior agents, but that you might well consider going the CID route for either IRS or Customs. Still exciting, but not quite as exciting (in a bad way) as DEA or ATF. My sis majored in accounting, and did an internship with the IRS, and that led to a job. Guns, badges, the whole ball of law enforcement, but with much better pay and no uniforms!
If you want more info, I can get you some, and you don't have to live in DC (sis lives in Reno, for instance).

Well thats awesome sea! Don't you worry about the snow, its more slushlike rain here. In comparison to Wyoming.... well the snow here wouldn't even be considered a dusting in their mind. Although several hondas did manage to get themselves stuck by their mystical magical honda powers- I laughed at them as I drove by in my Buick Then I got out and helped them after the appropriate amount of gloating.
I will warn you about the housing though. Real Estate is skyrocketing here (Northern Virginia). A house that would have cost you 300K 10 years ago is now worth a cool million. Its to the point of ridiculous, the Fairfax County Police cannot afford to live in the county anymore because of the cost of living. I would suggest looking in Centerville or somewhere in Maryland on the East side of DC, outside the city limits. I hear its much less expensive there.
Hey, if you get the job or are otherwise really planning on moving round here let me know, I'll get the appropriate literature and low down on whatever you need/want to know.
If you decide to come here don't just limit yourself to the 2 or three intell agencies that are HQed here, theres also the Capital Police, Secret Service, FBI, US Marshalls- maybe, and Homeland Security.
And apparently the CIA wants engineering student interns...that could prove to be very interesting...MUHAHHAHA....ahem- I mean.... yes....
Good Luck, keep us updated on how it goes!

Hey now. How do you know you don't know one already, zoomer?
We...ahem, I mean they...are everywhere.*
*I am really not a CIA . Wouldn't want to be one.

Well, here's hoping. I sent off my application and today was the deadline, so hopefully I'll hear from them soon.
I'm looking into other areas as well, but anyone who has contacts with interesting jobs sounds fab. What does your sister exactly do for the IRS? Sounds cool. Definitely let me know!
s for all

Oh, and as far as snow goes....
Today at work, there was a small patch of ice on the stairs in the morning. This is such big news in CA that several emails went around the office warning everyone not to step on the funny-looking puddle on the stairs.... We're not used to ice here!
