use a Wikipedia link in one of Chocoholic's Delight Club Entries. I can find no other choice - at the moment for 'Queen's Award for Enterprise' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen's_Award_for_Export_Achievement) unless someone's got the time to knock out an Entry on the subject, so I don't have to use Wiki's smiley - whistle

I haven't been a sub-ed for very long but I have noticed the Editors adding wiki links to entries I have returned.

I don't think there's a problem linking to wiki even though I wouldn't do it to one of my entries, I know the Editors might add them to the edited version.

My worry is that Wiki entries are not always accurate and can be tampered with by anyone as happened recently by the US government. They changed some data to read differently as it was embarrassing to the administration. Also a lot of stuff in Wiki is copied straight from other sources on the web, not original work at all.
I prefer the EG and sources such as the British Encyclopedia amongst others.
Just my personal feeling for what it's worth.

I never use wiki links in entries I sub and will actually always remove them and try to find a more suitable link. That's just a matter of personal crusade, though.

What irks me is when the BBC links to wiki when there's a perfectly acceptable h2g2 link.

agrees with EMR

if you can't find a decent web / bbc or h2g2 link then there is no need to have a link for a links sake

leaves off the topic to stealing form other web sites

smiley - cheers for the links GB, I'll certainly use the first one smiley - biggrin All I could find, apart from the Wiki one, was a load of companies that had received the award.

And thanks everyone else for your replies. smiley - smiley

I'm not at all comfortable with using Wiki links. I'd never heard of the 'Queen's Award for Enterprise' before, and felt a link to it would be useful for anyone else that hadn't. smiley - oksmiley - smiley

2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side...

Certainly with a lot of the science articles on Wiki (can't say for sure on other subjects), the ones that look really quite good an correct on Wiki invariabley turn out (after looking at other webpages), to be plagerised in whole or part, or merely less well written verisons of stuff thats on other sites smiley - weird Don't know if thats only for science based stuff though smiley - alienfrown

Hello there all,

Linking to Wiki links is fine...we'd always advise people to link to the site that's most useful in relation to the entry.

Regarding the rest of the BBC (such as the homepage) linking to Wikipedia - it has to do this as part of wider recommendations: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/3866355.stm It's nothing personal, honestly! smiley - smiley

I should have added a smiley - tongueincheek to my original question smiley - smiley but having read so many negative opinions of Wiki, using a link to one of their pages would be an absolute last resort. smiley - oksmiley - smiley

I was quite surprised a few months ago to find a Wikipedia article citing one of my old (2001) h2g2 book reviews as a source, so it's not all bad... smiley - winkeye
