Aw bless
I just love the reactions and discussions provoked from my little life-observations.
Thanks Ormy
and thank you, Coely, I cannot agree you have a "small" influence - if you persuaded one person to sign up to be a blood donor or potential organ-donator then you've made quite a significant difference, because that person will tell others, etc.
I also have the same feelings about my daughter Happyfacehelen "Of course, I hope I'm not going to be put in the position of needing to decide, but I'm torn between respecting her wishes and doing what I personally believe to be the right thing" let's hope we never have to decide for our children.
Niwt do the Aussies like *anything* British?
I have more time today and I found that link for Shirley Nolan OBE
A842924 Bless her.
Tal what I was going to say can't be repeated here {young ears} so I'll just instead.

Sorry, should have made it clear that you can register to donate bone marrow if you are under 40, if you've done that, then you can donate if you are over 40 but the potential is less as they prefer people under 40, and young men (not the only ones ). The act of donation has less effect on healthy young men.....so if you're in that category, sign up today if you can!!!

Only under 40? - I signed up a few months ago, and it seems like I joined the register just in time.

According to the latest (blood) Donor magazine, which just arrived.
"Currently patients have a 1 in 50,000 chance of finding a bone marrow match."
With those odds, it's a wonder that many patients are helped at all. I wonder if they meant 'ideal match'?
It also said you can join the register if you are 18-44, in good health, and a blood donor, and digging up the leaflet I applied from (just emerged from under a few month's worth of junk on my desk), it says the same thing.

I'm still too old
They took 3 pints of blood from me between the ages of 18-19½ but then I got married and was working full-time and then I was having babies when I tried to go back inbetween Allan & Andrew's births {age 28-38} they wouldn't have any because of the medication I was on {anti-inflammatories for my arthritis} I also take painkillers.
There wasn't a bone marrow donation scheme when I was younger.
I've told my grown-up children about it and I think Laura's joined.
