Sho - employed again! Started conversation Oct 27, 2006
so... recap: overworked, desperate for someone to be taken on to relieve the load of me and the other 4 assistants in the Sales Department...
We were called in to a meeting by the Sales Director (who is my drect boss as it happens that he handles "my" customer) and the senior Korean manager...
"we wanted to let you know, before you see it in the papers yourselves, that we are advertising for another person for the department"
sounds good
"it is to help lighten the load"
sounds even better
"because it's a responsible position we're going to have to offer something good"
here it comes,then
"it will be an assistent manager position, he'll be taking over some of the work that our HQ do and the Sales Director and Project Manager will hand over some of their duties"
ah... so rather than help for us, it is yet another flamin' manager (and don't think my use of the male pronoun was to save extra keystrokes) which will mean yet another person to report to...
now I don't mind that I have been told, in not quite so many words, that I won't get promoted because I'm not male, Korean and I'm too old and oh yah, I have kids... it's the fact that this news could have been delivered in one sentence and it wouldn't have got our backs up.
My managers have been promising me promotion for the 6 years I've been there (especially to distingish me from the 4 people - same level as me) that I have trained, and to reflect the fact that I handle our major major hugest account. On my own since the manager in charge believes I can do it without his help. No sh*t Sherlock -he hasn't a clue what I actually do (when I was off sick for a week - with stress -the customer received not one call or mail from him...)
I am hugely insulted and trapped in that soul sucking place...
(yeppers - month end coming - I fully anticipate leaving the office at 3am...)

Very very good point, kelli. Apply for the job, Sho. Go on.
When you don't get it, you can at least take them to the cleaners...
stoopid glass ceilings

Go and apply for the job. It sounds pretty obvious to me that you can do the job!!

Apply for the job and join the union at the same time, if there is one that is and you're not already a member.

they pretty much said that none of us is qualified and that they had considered internal recruiting and rejected it.
Basically I don't want to apply because:
a) I know it will be rejected
and
b) I hate working there so much that even a change of job within the company wouldn't help
So... back to Monster, the Arbeitsamt and the Sits Vac for me today

aw, thanks
I realise that moaning about my lot at work is a bit iffy given the number of unemployed here, but still...

I can't even land a poxy 4 hours per week job with some old geezer running a company from his attic! I am starting to feel as though there is something wrong with me. Is it that obvious that I am a grumpy old bat? Perhaps I should change my perfume or shower more frequently than once a year?

You shouldn't feel that you can't moan about your job sho, just because you are working doesn't mean that you have to like it, we've all at some point or another had jobs that we hated but hat to do because of our circumstances, you for instance have your children to consider.
Moan away we really don't mind

Cal is right, there's nothng wrong with moaning about your job - I wouldmn't want it. although I guess it's paid much better than my job - but I'm quite happy with my job.

well I'm really now... I've seen the ad and it's for a Junior Manager (so 2 steps up from me) and...
almost perfectly describes my job
I'm now seriously thinking of applying, attaching my current job description and a request for a company car and a €2000 per month pay rise...

*grins* then you get the pleasure of saying, 'thanks but no thanks, too little too late' you can stick your tongue at at them too if you like

oh Cal... I'd love to do that.
Lil... well, it would be good on my CV.
However, until I grow a willy I'm not getting the job, so I'm pretty safe to apply. I'm pretty sure that they know I'm looking elsewhere (well, reading the Sits Vac at my desk at lunchtime is a bit of a giveaway )
The really funny thing is... if they weren't so stupid, they would have advertised for another assistant, and let the 4 of us carry on doing what we do which pretty much covers this job (and then some) anyway. Much much cheaper and no grumpy working-to-rule me to cope with.
Key: Complain about this post
