I'm your sub-editor for The Chelyabinsk Superbolide. The new version is here A87826305 - please subscribe!

Excellent write up of the events (I remember seeing video clips on the news smiley - yikes )

Just one query: "estimate its size (over 17m)" - 17m in diameter?

Hi again Sasha!
Thank you!
These things scare me to death, to be honest. I load up "Space Weather" each morning and there are new "NEA's" listed, some within moon distance!smiley - yikes and we never saw this one coming...smiley - facepalm

To answer your question:
These things aren't round, they're like enormous potatoes in shape, so I hesitate to use the word "diameter", which is a straight line going through the middle of a circle connecting two points on the circumference (or so I remember from maths lessons in school) smiley - winkeye

If you would like me to elaborate, then 17m is its fattest bulge, I'd say "at the widest point"smiley - ok

Thanks GB - I added that in (my favourite maths is about multidimensional objects, so '17m' looks funny to my eyes, as I think of 1- or 2-dimensional shapes rather than 3-dimensional) Makes it clear that the objects aren't spheres, too smiley - ok

I'm happy with this now, so if you are too, I'll send it on its way as well smiley - biggrin

Just a note to say thank you - you've done sterling work this last month keeping everything running smoothly smiley - ok Sorry I haven't been doing quite as much as I should...

I'm thankful for h2g2 and the requirements for updating the front page that give me firm incentives to emerge from the soup I'm in... I couldn't do it without you keeping track of the subbing etc, though smiley - magic I'm enjoying doing the final proofreads this week, which is a good task smiley - ok

Thanks again smiley - hug

I couldn't do this job without you either.smiley - cheerup

I find keeping busy helps keep your mind active and you can lose yourself in other people's work. It helps the healing process too. I'm missing visiting Ian's Mum, and mourn her loss even though she was 99, and wanted to go, it's made no difference to my feelings.

You take your own sweet time and do whatever you can when you can, we're doing great and have a healthy pile of fabulous upcoming entries for the GP to readsmiley - biggrinI know they get read even if we don't get any feedback, it's still a great accomplishment what we are doingsmiley - hug

It is a great accomplishment smiley - biggrin At the h2g2 Meet, Pastey mentioned that in Pliny there is a Social Media panel on Entries, and it is good to see the Tweets and Facebook Likes there, as well as the comments in h2g2 itself smiley - ok

I just felt like saying especial thank you, as it is a difficult time for us both... I am keeping busy, but I prefer to be offline in the evenings still smiley - crysmiley - towel and I think the soup has been thicker this week because I've been under the weather for a few days and Deb wasn't there to laugh at my version of man-flu and comfort me, so not to worry. Today was productive, so I feel better all round smiley - ok We are doing a great job!

Interestingly, a Butterfly Bush (Buddleia) planted itself in the corner outside the accessible door of my office this year. It's flowering well, now, and arches over my head when I go in the building. The bees are enjoying it, mainly, but there have been a few Tortoiseshell butterflies too - one flew round me today smiley - biggrinsmiley - orangebutterfly Lovely smiley - loveblush

smiley - ok

I have seen more bees than butterflies this year - but I am happy the bees make use of the plants. Interestingly, my clematis which flowered earlier in the year, has suddenly sprang into life again and bloomed. I don't recall two lots of flowers from the same plant in the same year beforesmiley - huh
