I'm glad to hear it's going so well smiley - smiley It's what it's all about.

I've been out shed loads lately. This is my first night in pretty much since the beginning of October, I think. Went to see a band called The Dizzy Club at The Boardwalk in Sheffield last night - popular jazz & swing, lots of happy people and a really good atmosphere. Makes such a difference when people are there to have fun and aren't just wondering round on one big meat hunt (ie., trying to find people to get off with) like they always seem to be in clubs.

What else? I've joined a couple of Uni societies (I'm still technically a student). Sheffield union has been voted the best in the country, so I thought one of theirs would be a good bet. I'm now in the Flying Teapots Circus Skills society (!) and the Singing society (I am musically minded). Think I may join another - haven't decided what yet.

Work's going OK, though having the slowest computer in the office is driving me up the wall - I waited 4 hours the other day for something to print. And I'm getting several commissions for websites. Sometime soon I'm going to have to stop going out on the town all nights and getting down to coding some of those.

Morning. Sobered up yet from Fresher's week? smiley - smiley Someone assumed I was a fresher the other week (I'm in two University societies in Sheffield despite not technically being a student here), which I think I rather liked. I really don't want to look like a young professional *just* yet smiley - smiley, despite the fact that I'm four years older than the person I was talking to.

Work's going well. I was involved in a presentation for a refurbishment scheme for the Sheffield Wildlife Trust (SWT) and got quite a few words of personal thanks from their director for the work I'd done. Perhaps if I do some more he'll pay me for it smiley - winkeye Actually, it's a bit more complex than that. The SWT have bought this old church hall and some land next to it. The hall we're converting into their new offices. The land they wanted to make into a wildlife garden that had community involvement, so they arranged a street party to encourage the community to come and say what they wanted in it. They also had other community groups go, including the people who presently use the hall (but can't afford to upkeep it) who are being found new venues. The people I work for were invited along to show what was being done to the hall. However, most of the drawings we produce for any project are to show the builders how to build it and are fairly meaningless to the general public, so Alan and Mike (who have actually designed the thing) knocked up some A1 sheets of plans, elevations and text and Phil and myself did a computer presentation - one of the images I did is on my h2g2 space.

What are your lectures / tutorials like? Are you enjoying them?

Uni life is getting ridiculuos now!! I was just recovering from freshers week when last week became Reading Week and well not much reading was done by me!! Last night We decided that as it had got to 4.30am and I had a lecture at 9am that we would stay up all night so I am now on a severe caffine high! I don't know how I'm gonna get to sleep tonight!

Last Thursday we all got very drunk (again!) and ended up tying one of the blokes to my next-door neighbour's bed!! Scarey huh? Friday we had a wicked party for halloween and we all dressed up in fancy-dress! And got very very drunk (yet again!) I'm sure we're all gonna come out of uni and into rehab or join the AA!! smiley - smiley (onlee joking we're not really that bad!)

Lectures are great I really love my course! I'm loving uni life!

Feel flattered that someone mistook you for a fresher! You must look youthful!

Write soon!!

Youthful? Nah. I just look permanently lost smiley - winkeye Not, of course, that I'm saying you're geographically challenged.

You sound like you're having fun. Don't make the mistake I did and end up with a crowd older than you. They were nice people, but Uni life should have been more fun. Perhaps I'll rectify that when I go back next year smiley - smiley

nb., an easy solution to reading weeks - get a big group of you, split up the texts into manageable chunks and each of you record on. Then bribe someone into editing them onto one tape (lots of beer usually helps, though make sure he has it *after* he's finished, for obvious reasons), duplicate it and each have a copy. Play it when you go to bed. It's supposed to enter the mind subconsciously while you sleep and, although it's unlikely to work, you'll have some pleasantly bizarre dreams which you can write about in your exam instead smiley - smiley

I wont have the older crowd problem, quite the oosite as everyone 9well virtualy everyone) that I come in to contact with is a year younger than me! As for the reading week thang, I just drank and slept so there!

I'm not geographically chalenged! I'm quite at ease (well most of the time unless I get lost teehee!!!)

We were on the Absinth last nite now that's a drink and a half!!!

Well that be allus 4 the mo.

Mwah!!

Absinth is good stuff!! Although it doesn't last as long as it should do!! Between three of us we drank the whole bottle in three days!!
Apparantly I now collect legs, don't ask me how it happened, I'm not sure myself!! All I did was visit my friend and her sister In Manchester and the next thing I know Stuart and Anwen are saying that I collect legs!! - freaky huh?
Are you looking forwards to Christmas? I can't wait!! I love this time of year when everyone is friendly and you just have to buy people things!
Well that's all for now!

Hmm. I'd be worried about that - you might look in the mirror one day soon and find that you've turned into Rolf Harris... I know a few people who collect the things at the top of the legs (usually along with the rest of the bloke in question, though sometimes I have my doubts), but never just the legs. Do you collect feet, too?

I'm a little disturbed that Christmas has landed on me so quickly. It's what comes of having my first year since I was four not in education. It has been a little odd - like I've had a five month holiday during which I've worked loads. I still think in terms of Uni terms (partly I guess through being in some student societies) and my workload is probably going to increase pretty dramatically soon, so the holiday feeling probably won't last much longer. On the other hand, I do get to design the Christmas card for the people I work for smiley - smiley I'll have to post a copy up on my page.

I take it you'll be back in sunny Hampshire for Christmas? Keep thinking of going down to Portsmouth and saying hello to friends from University, though none of them will be there in a week or so's time so perhaps that's one to leave till the new year (along with an h2g2 meetup - I'm determined to get to one one of these days smiley - smiley How about you? You been to one yet? They're renowned...)

How rude!!! I was quite innocently collecting legs and you make it sound so crude! smiley - tongueout

Of course I'm going home, it's getting far too cold this far north! smiley - smiley

Christmas is the best time of year! smiley - smiley)

I'm off 2 manchester with my next-door neighbour today! Yay! escape from Wales for a while!!

I've not heard of h2g2 meet ups but then maybe I've just lead a very sheltered life!

Gotta go,

There was a meet-up in London, apparently, on November 25th. I only found out about it about a week after smiley - sadface Then again I've not really been on here much recently either.

Out of interest, what did you go to Manchester for? Just wonder as a friend of mine went today also to go and see a band somewhere. Be cool if you'd both gone to the same place smiley - smiley I can find out different points of view on the music and stuff then.

nb., apologies about the leg comments. However, some people I know are that crude... Perhaps I'm getting cynical in my old age smiley - winkeye

Have a good Christmas - lots of reading smiley - smiley And of course turkey, presents and stuff.

I loose track of why I go to Manchester now, (possibly cause my friend Al is from there? - oh yeah!) I went last time to see an amature drama thing which was really good! But it looks like I'm off again on 22nd Jan cause Al and Stoo are going to see Marylin Manson! -Now there is one scarey person! even if he does have a point at times!! :-0

Incidentally I'm back home now and missing uni life already! It's so hard having to organise travelling and stuff if you want to go out with your m8s! It was so much easier when I could knock on peoples doors at 6.30pm and say "lets go out tonight!" smiley - sadface

I wont take your crude comments personally, I have many crude friends anyway! and a twisted/warped mind because of it!! smiley - tongueout

Wot actually happens at these meet-ups anyway? anything exciting?

Merry Christmas to you too!!

Love Rach

Wot happens at the meet-ups? There's typically something 'constructive' arranged for the daytime (I seem to recall at the first meet-up everyone played rounders in one of the parks in central London, which sounded like enormous fun, that is until they got rained off...) and then everyone who's of an appropriate age or older goes to the pub and obtain various states of inebriality. I've not met a researcher who's had a bad word to say about them - they really are worth going to smiley - smiley

Hmm. I seem to recall flatmate incompatabilities did lead to some reorganisation of who was living in our flat and who wasn't. Was quite turmulous - the sheen of the first months of being a fresher can wear of with uncomfortable results. I hope whatever has happened it sorts itself out. The last thing you want during such an important time of your life is anything as pithy as soap-opera-esque arguments spoiling the fun smiley - sadface

Hope the exams go well, too. Can come as a bit of a shock after all that beer! Look forward to hearing you have something happy to talk about smiley - smiley Do you have a May Ball to look forward to?
